#LRSD1District1Book Gets Off to an Exciting Start with Assemblies Across the District

Following back-to-back successful campaigns, LRSD continues its One District One Book reading effort. Through One District One Book, all 13,000 elementary students simultaneously read the same book. Community partners pitch in to purchase the books. Families are encouraged to read the books together at home. While at school, students enjoy participating in chapter-themed projects, science experiments and other related activities. This year’s book is The One and Only Ivan –told through the title character, a gorilla who lives at a shopping mall. Sponsors include the Little Rock Zoo, Southwest Power Pool, Arvest Bank, Rotary Club 99 and Economics Arkansas. A special zoo day connected to the campaign was hosted in November for LRSD families. Additional dates will be shared on the District website and social media about upcoming One District One Book events.

  • New this year, as students read The One and Only Ivan, they will participate in challenges that include receiving electronic clues to solve problems in a virtual escape room, and have the opportunity to win prizes. Supt. Mike Poore has issued the first challenge:
    • Challenge 1
Students are requested to read the first chapter with their parent/guardian, then post a photo of themselves reading with their parent/guardian on the school's social media sites, using hashtags #LRSD1District1Book and #LRSDPowerofUS
(More great photos can be on Twitter and the District's Facebook page, using the above hashtags)
A Special Thanks to our Sponsors!

Parkview Students Get the Financial "Real Deal"

Parkview's Civics/Economic teachers have introduced students to Get Real-Here’s the Deal!
Get Real-Here’s the Deal! Is a hands-on experiential simulation that gives young people the opportunity to experience their future in a financial decision-making mode. Youth are encouraged to make wise financial lifestyle choices similar to those that adults face each month. As youth move from station to station they make decisions based on their family size and affordability. The simulation is prepared for school classrooms (ex. Family and Consumers Science, English, Business, etc.) and designed for three one-hour sessions. The three sessions include a preparation day, simulation day, and follow up evaluation day.

In the Spotlight...

This Sunday, Romine teacher Ryan Westin will be running his 200th marathon. Not Netflix marathons, 26.2 mile marathons. Marathon 200 will be in Millington, TN at the Shelby Forest Marathon…..as of right now, in the rain.

He ran his first marathon on January 7, 2007 at the Disney Marathon and soon after ran a marathon in all 50 states finishing in Vermont at the Mad Marathon on July 8, 2012.

In 2015, he was a passenger in a fatal head-on car crash and was in the trauma unit for 5 days. While in the trauma unit, his bucket of things he wanted to accomplish for motivation to get out of his hospital bed and  back to living life again included getting back to the classroom and and completing a marathon. Following grueling physical therapy he made it back for the first day of school - 18 days later. He ran a marathon two months after the crash and finished his 100th marathon at Little Rock Marathon in 2016.

After finishing his goals, he now focuses on others... guiding blind runners  or pacing others.  This week,  he will be the 4:40 pacer at the Little Rock Marathon and has paced at  Marine Corps, Oklahoma City, St Jude Memphis, Louisiana, Go! St. Louis and many other marathons.

Your LRSD family is proud of you, Ryan Westin!
