LRSD serves as a connection to school-based mental health services for over 1600 students. LRSD Mental Health department supports parents with comprehensive child and adolescent mental health services that are child and family centered, culturally sensitive, and strength based. LRSD also holds regular trainings for teachers and staff to increase awareness, eliminate stigmas, and provide new strategies.

There is still time to purchase your Spring Banquet tickets!  The link will take you to the ticket information so that you can purchase them online.  No tickets will be mailed.  You will check in at the event the night of.  We hope that you are planning to join us for our end of the year event where we will recognize our Reflections winners.  We will also recognize schools and/or  individuals who have dedicated themselves and their work to the success of our students.  Awards will be given in the following categories:

Gibbs International Fest is Tonight!
May 3, 2019 - 5:30PM - 8:00PM


Gibbs World Cultures Club Celebrates
"United Kingdom in the Garden"

The Gibbs World Cultures Club met to celebrate the United Kingdom with garden activities.  The Dunbar Gardener, Ms. Gibbs, is from Portsmouth in southern England.  She brought English goodies for the students to try.  The students decorated plastic pots, and Ms. Gibbs helped them plant basil plants in their new pot to take home. The next World Cultures Club will be Wednesday, May 15.
Thank you, Ms. Gibbs and the Dunbar Garden for hosting World Cultures Club this month! The Annual Gibbs International Fest and PTA fundraiser is tonight from 5:30-8:00 p.m.! The event includes international performances on the central stage. This year the PTA is selling Passports for the event.  A Child Passport includes a visit to each of the food vendors, access to the Creative Corridor and the Petting Zoo. The Unlimited Child Passport includes a visit to each food vendor, access to the Creative Corridor, Petting Zoo, and unlimited entries to the bounce houses, face painting & henna, AND the Cake Walk! Passports or tickets can be purchased at the gate on May 3, rain or shine.

International Concert Performed at Gibbs
     Numerous winners of the international music competition in Ibla-Ragusa, Sicily, Italy performed at Gibbs International Magnet School on Monday, April 29.  Ragusa is a Little Rock Sister City.  Students and teachers heard vocalists, pianists, pan flautist, and clarinetist. 

The winning performers were:

     They are brought to Gibbs each year by Sherman Banks, President IBLA Arkansas and Master of Ceremony.  Ibla Foundation President, Dr. Salvatore Moltisanti, accompanied the performers to Arkansas.  Gibbs is one of a handful of venues for the concert. This year Gibbs students learned a brand new song, “What is Ibla?”  The answer to the song is “Ibla is music, Ibla is love” as music is the universal language.  Here is information about a free concert on Saturday evening:  Saturday, May 4, at 7:00 pm, First United Methodist Church – 220 West Main St., Jacksonville, AR.

OTHER INTERNATIONAL VISITORS
     Global Ties-Arkansas brought five visitors to Gibbs on Monday to watch the concert as guests of Mr. Aaron Lubin (Gibbs mentor and Global Ties board member).  The visitors were from Myanmar, Peru, Ukraine, and Vietnam.

LRSD music specialists with national and international clinician Artie Almeida at Central Arkansas Orff Chapter Meeting held Saturday, April 27 at Roberts Elementary.
   



Triple Win for Hall High's Jennifer Mendoza
Congratulations to Hall High Senior, Jennifer Mendoza, on winning 2nd Place and $650 with her handmade beaded dress on Sunday, April 28, at the William J. Clinton Presidential Library 8th Annual Curbside Couture competition!

This was the third win for Jennifer and her handmade beaded dress as she also won 1st Place and a $4,000 college scholarship from the Thea Foundation Fashion Design competition on March 30, and was awarded 1st Place in the Crafts Division at the Arkansas Young Artist Association on April 10. Jennifer will exhibit her dress at the LRSD Administration Building at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 16th as she receives a citation from LRSD for her accomplishments.



Cloverdale Students Present PBL Findings to
NASA Researchers ans Assistants



Cloverdale students presented the results of their Project-Based Learning (PBL) classes to 125 NASA researchers and assistants from 17 colleges and universities across Arkansas.  NASA’s Arkansas Space Grant Consortium is Cloverdale’s Community Partner for the district-wide PBL initiative.  Cloverdale students picked 4 projects that were being researched at UAFS, ASU, SAU, and John Brown University; the students then studied the problems and began designing solutions.  Arkansas Space Grant provided $7,000 in grants to the Aerospace division at Cloverdale for this endeavor.  Teachers from English, Math, Social Studies, Band, and Music worked with their students on several of these projects emphasizing cross-curricular concepts. The culmination was presentation of their projects at the 27rd Arkansas Space Grant Consortium Symposium at the Winrock Institute on April 19th.
Carver Magnet Pre-K Students Join in on the One District One Book Fun by Reading "Just Going to the Dentist"


Carver Magnet Elementary Early Childhood Center is participating in One District One book by reading "Just Going to the Dentist" by Mercer Mayer. Students are learning about good dental health by participating in many age appropriate experiments and hands on lessons. Students learned a tooth brushing song, painted teeth using white paint and toothbrushes, brushed fake teeth in water play, used play dough to create teeth, and used a giant tooth and toothbrush to practice good oral hygiene. Students discussed what foods are good for their teeth and what foods they should avoid.
Parkview Hosts Two Outstanding Authors


Parkview Arts Science Magnet High school was afforded the opportunity to host two outstanding authors through WITS (Writers In The School). Maurice Ruffin author of “We Cast A Shadow” and Roman Muradov author of “On Doing Nothing: Finding Inspiration in Idleness” were phenomenal.



Mabelvale Middle's Znya Wright Receives Prestigious Award for Outstanding Achievement in Math


Znya Wright, a student at Mabelvale Middle School, has been named a recipient of the prestigious 2019 National 180 Student Awards, which recognizes 16 children across the United States who overcame significant obstacles to become thriving, successful learners. The 13th annual 180 Student Awards program, organized by learning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, honors students who, with the help of their remarkable teachers, have made notable progress in literacy and math achievement as well as personal growth outside the classroom. Way to go, Znya!
Anusha Bhattacharyya, LRCH, Earns Prestigious Science Award and $12,000 Scholarship

She's Done it Again!
LRCH Senior Anusha Bhattacharyya adds another honor to her credit plus thousands in scholarship money. Anusha earned 1st place at the National JSHS (Junior Science and Humanities Symposium sponsored by National Army Navy and Air Force) and will receive a $12,000 scholarship!!!

Verizon Arena



The above information will be particularly important as we approach graduation season.  In the spirit of cooperation, we are requesting that you familiarize yourselves with the security measures in place at Verizon Arena.  Knowing these rules in advance, and following them,will help ensure an enjoyable experience for all who plan to attend LRSD graduation ceremonies.  These requirements apply to everyone who enters the Verizon site.
