You know what they say: third time's the charm. After LRSD asked voters twice in 2017 and 2020 for the extended millage, WE finally did it! LRSD won its election on Tuesday, November 2 to extend the debt! Thank you to the LRSD community for showing up at the polls to make this happen. This means upgrades to facilities across the district including Central, Parkview, Dunbar and Hall. In addition to those upgrades, the District has plans to build a new K-8 school on the site of the old McClellan High.  Another planned project is a new 1200-seat traditional high school in west Little Rock. We are so excited about what this means for the future of our district! Check out our thank you video!

HarvestFest 2021 was a huge success! We had so much fun interacting with the Hillcrest community and spreading the word about our amazing district. We took lots of photos and even got the opportunity to meet LRSD students, parents, and supporters. Special thank you to the district staff members who volunteered their time to man our booth, you are greatly appreciated!

Join Chicot for their November Community Cafe. They'll have another drive-in movie featuring Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving and Garfield's Thanksgiving. Dinner is free from Smackey's BBQ. Plus, goodie bags with treats and information from Chicot Health Clinic, CALS, and the City of Little Rock.

The event is free and open to anyone. Please wear a face mask. The event is drive-thru, and walkers are welcome.

Caught Doing Good

This week's #CaughtDoingGood is Southwest High's civics teacher Mr. Todd Ferguson. Principal Marvin Burton applauds Mr. Ferguson on his organic approach to building relationships with his students. Mr. Ferguson is often spotted in the hallways while students transition to their next class with a sign that will have important info like the date and a nice quote on the back. Mr. Burton says that he witnesses students stop, engage, and actually read the signs. Mr. Ferguson is such a genuine educator who really cares about the emotional health of his students and this week's video really captures that essence.

Bright the Night

Join the holiday festivities on Capitol Plaza, at the corner of Capitol Ave. and Main St., where we will light up downtown with our Bright the Night festival! Presented by Simmons Bank, Bright the Night is a fun, family friendly event for all ages! Come meet Santa, sing some carols, and enjoy the snow! The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will be there, too, to help spread the cheer. The event begins at 5:30pm and is free and open to the public. The holiday lights will be on display through the New Year.

LRSD Feet to the Seat Campaign Aims to Improve School Attendance

LRSD hosted a special event to help promote school attendance as part of its Feet to the Seat Campaign. The kick off for the annual event to combat chronic absenteeism was Tuesday, October 26, at  J.A. Fair K-8 Preparatory Academy. The District enlisted the support of NBA star and Hall alum Bobby Portis to help with motivational video messaging.

The campaign implemented strategies to improve school attendance, which has been impacted by multiple challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools across the District will have a targeted campaign effort, with a push district-wide emphasizing the importance of school attendance and its correlation with academic success. 

During Tuesday's event, the community heard strategies the District will initiate to combat absenteeism through the campaign and learn more about the plan to have one of LRSD's most famous son's promoting awareness.

Washington Elementary Opens
New Telehealth Clinic!

On Thursday October 28th, thanks to an amazing partnership with ARCare, Washington Elementary was able to open a new school-based, virtual health clinic. The clinic provides a host of services such as tests for strep, the flu, RSV, and COVID-19, as well as providing physicals. For more information you can check out their Facebook page. 

Early Voting Continues On Monday Week!

Early Voting Continues  Monday with  actual election  day on November 2nd on the extension of 

LRSD's debt!.  This is not a new tax or even an additional tax - just what is currently being paid - for an additional 19 years.

ViPS Jane Mendel Reading Day
 Quickly Approaching!

 

ViPS Jane Mendel Reading Day is coming up on Tuesday, November 16 with  in-person, virtual, and donor options are available. Donate any new, hardback book of your choice or review the list below (Schools have made specific requests for books to help them to meet student demand.) All purchased books should be delivered to the ViPS office no later than November 5. Donor labels will be made for each, and all books will be delivered to schools by November 16. Red Ribbon Week Celebrated Throughout the District

Red Ribbon Week was observed by the amazing students and staff at Romine ECC. The participation was great. The Romine Mighty Mustangs under the leadership of Principal Tyrone Harris were proud to challenge others to be drug free!!!

 

Metro's Criminal Justice Students Send Informative Message on the Consequences of Harmful TikTok Challenges 

The students of Metropolitan's Criminal Justice Program wanted to make students, staff and any other parties aware of the consequences and how important it is not to be a part of some ongoing TikTok challenges. You can Watch the full video here. 

LR Southwest's #WhyApply Campaign Recap

  

In order to encourage students to consider going to college, Little Rock Southwest High School teachers participated in the #WHYAPPLY campaign by wearing college shirts, taking pictures and posting to social media, sharing why they attended college. What an inspirational way to get students engaged and excited about higher education!

Thea Foundation's 2021-2022 Scholarship Competition!

The Thea Foundation announces a significant increase for their 2021-2022 scholarship competition. The foundation will continue to offer 36 scholarships with an increase in offerings from $80,000 to $219,000. The theme for this year is "Reflection/Refraction". All submissions in all categories for this year's competition will be conducted online. 

The categories are:

Visual Arts - 10 Scholarships

Performing Arts - 10 Scholarships

Creative Writing - 10 Scholarships

Film - 3 Scholarships

Fashion Design - 3 Scholarships

Below are the key deadlines for 2022 competitions:

Looking for Resources During COVID-19?

Since October 2020, the City of Little Rock and Our House, in partnership with the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund, have operated an innovative resource to support residents hard hit by the pandemic. The Financial Resources Hotline is a virtual “one-stop-shop” where callers receive over-the-phone guidance in navigating a variety of topics.

The project is part of a nationwide initiative including 52 municipalities with similar projects. The City of Little Rock Department of Community Programs has contracted with the Our House Career Center to field over 10,000 calls from residents seeking assistance.

The hotline is free of cost and staffed by a trained team that helps callers understand and access the local, state, and federal resources available to them.
