2019 LRSD Virtual Convocation

School and department staff are recommended to watch the Convocation on site at your respective buildings as a team via Facebook.  Names will be drawn at intervals during the Convocation.  If your name is called, you must be present at your work site to win, and you will have a limited time to let us know via posting to Facebook that you are watching.  Your supervisor/principal must verify your location and attendance.  For ALL posts, please include the hashtag #LRSDPowerofUS #LRSDConvocation2019 #LRSDLTFFE2019

The school site or department with the most participation will win lunch at the end of the school year.

Whitlow Still in the Running to Become 
Arkansas's Top Teacher


2019 LRSD TOY Jeff Whitlow (Roberts) learned this week that he made it to the top 4 who are still in contention for 2020 Arkansas Teacher of the Year.  Wouldn't it be cool to have back-to-back winners from LRSD?  His predecessor, Stacey McAdoo (Central), was named the 2019 ATOY.  Keeping our fingers crossed for you, Mr. Whitlow!

I Got the Music In Me



LRSD's talented music students participated in workshops with partner in education, Art Porter Music Education, Inc. this week. The workshops include musical training and public speaking and are held in conjunction with the non-profit's annual A Work of ART scholarship fundraiser.  Gabriel Wade, 2019 Parkview grad, was named one of this year's recipient's.  Gabriel is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, known for his skills on piano and trumpet.  Congrats, Gabe!  (BTW, Gabe will join fellow workshop participants, Minors in Music, for a free concert tonight at Hotel Frederica on Capitol Avenue.)

Baseball in Rural Arkansas Featured in Library Lineup
Roberts Library events highlight state sports history, environmental public art
LITTLE ROCK, AR – The Central Arkansas Library System’s (CALS) Bobby L. Roberts Library of Arkansas History & Art has concerts, films, and more scheduled throughout the month of August.  All activities take place at the library’s downtown campus, Library Square, 100 Rock Street, and are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. To view the Roberts Library’s full calendar of events, visit www.robertslibrary.org.

Legacies & Lunch: Jim Yeager: Baseball in Rural Arkansas
Wednesday, August 7 • Noon
CALS Main Library, Darragh Center

Focusing on preserving fascinating but often forgotten stories, Jim Yeager’s new book, Backroads and Ballplayers, features more than fifty chapters on the lives of professional baseball players from rural Arkansas. A semi-retired educator who spent more than forty years as a coach, teacher, guidance counselor, and educational technology specialist, Yeager is the former women’s basketball coach at Arkansas Tech University.  He has a BS and MS in history and education from the University of Central Arkansas. Yeager is a native of Ozark and currently resides in Russellville. Presented by CALS Butler Center for Arkansas Studies.

2nd Friday Art Night
Friday, August 9 • 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.
The Galleries at Library Square
The Galleries’ 2nd Friday Art Night event includes a discussion of the Drain Smart program, two exhibitions, and live music by Jazz ‘R’ Us (jazz-pop trio).

Drain Smart is an engaging public-education/environmental program that uses art to communicate the function and importance of local storm drains. It gives artists the opportunity to express themselves via semi-permanent public art in a series of a small-scale outdoor storm drain murals. The art also serves to educate the public on local water quality protection. Norm Berner of the Friends of Fourche Creek organization will talk about the Drain Smart program. There will be a pop-up exhibition with eighteen paintings that were replicated on storm drains around the city. More information about Drain Smart is available at www.drain-smart.org.

Melissa Cowper-Smith: Natural Treatment, 2018–2019
This series of pigment prints on handmade paper offers a visual chronicle of Cowper-Smith’s interviews with herbalists in the Ozark and Central River Valley regions of Arkansas and their complex relationships to healing, illness, and belief. On display in the Loft Gallery through September 28.

Arkansas Society of Printmakers: Big Impression Prints
The exhibition features prints by members of the Arkansas Society of Printmakers (ASP). This show celebrates the impact large-scale imagery has upon the viewer—making a big impression. On display in the West Gallery through October 26.

Finding Family Facts   
A free monthly genealogy course taught by Rhonda Stewart, CALS local history and genealogy expert.  Presented by CALS Butler Center for Arkansas Studies. Two sessions:
