Caught Doing Good

Last week Ms. Pamela Smith, Communications Director, was #caughtdoinggood! Ms. Smith is usually the person behind the camera but this time we caught her by surprise. During this touching moment of recognition, her colleague Dr. Frederick Fields, Director of Student Services, raved that Ms. Smith touches every aspect of the District as she plays a major role in the coordination of most District events. Ms. Hope Worsham, Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction, gave a heartwarming account of her first encounter with Ms. Smith, recalling how welcomed Ms. Smith made her feel. In order to watch the full video of Ms. Smith's team and colleagues catching her off guard, click the link below! Thank you so much for all that you do Ms. Smith, we are so lucky to have a true gem like you on our team!  #LRSDPowerofUS

CALS SUMMER READING CLUB PACKED WITH PET PARADE, MERMAIDS, AND PRIZES
Library system offers “Tails & Tales” themed events throughout June and July

Registration is open for Central Arkansas Library System’s (CALS) annual Summer Reading Club. From June 14 to July 31, CALS will be offering weekly programs and contests for readers of all ages, including grab-and-go activities, socially distanced in-person events at various branches, and virtual events taking place on Facebook, YouTube, Zoom, and other digital platforms. To register and view the full calendar of “Tails & Tales” themed events, visit cals.org/summer-reading-club.
“Each summer, we look forward to developing programs that encourage reading and spark the imagination,” said Ellen Samples, CALS Youth Services Coordinator. “‘Tails & Tales’ is such a fun theme because there are so many great books we can explore at any age with tales about all sorts of tails—dogs, dinosaurs, and even mermaids.”
This year, summer reading participants can look forward to new activities, including a Virtual Pet Parade. To enter the pet parade, families can submit photos or videos of their pets from June 1 to 30, and submissions will be used to create a virtual pet parade that will be broadcast via the CALS Kids Facebook page on July 13 at 2 p.m. There are many other events, including Storytime Live featuring several guest readers, virtual fieldtrips, Bingoflix for the adults, and crafts, including DIY fairy houses.
Everyone who registers for Summer Reading Club is eligible to receive a free tote bag filled with goodies (while supplies last). There will be weekly drawings for prizes done at each branch. To be entered into the drawing, participants must earn a “badge.” Badges are earned by logging and reviewing books or movies as well as completing activities or attending virtual programs. And upon completion of the program, kids and teens will receive a free book.
“Summer should always be fun, but it’s important for kids to continue learning,” Samples added. “Summer Reading Club is a great combination of the two.”
