LRCH Student Doing Big Things!

Congrats to LRCH's Richard Liu on being elected Lieutenant Governor of Boys State and Boys Nation senator last week! Liu proudly represented Central and plans to take his ideas on activism and leadership to D.C. where he'll present them to our government representatives.

We were also elated to learn Richard is the first runner-up to the Clinton Center's annual Ideas Matter Scholarship Essay Contest. The contest encourages high school students to address the most urgent concerns of today by turning their ideas into action plans. Richard took this opportunity to write about improving public health. Keep an eye for this young and brilliant mind, we know more great things are to come.

Congratulations Again Retirees!

This past Tuesday, LRSD hosted a retirement celebration for former LRSD employees who retired after August 1, 2020 and current employees planning to retire June 30, 2021. We enjoyed watching the retirees drive through with their loved ones to receive their certificates, gifts, light refreshments, and praise. Congratulations again, we hope this next chapter of your life is filled with well-deserved relaxation and new memories made. Head over to our Facebook page to see more pictures capturing this event.

CALS SUMMER READING CLUB PACKED WITH PET PARADE, MERMAIDS, AND PRIZES
Library system offers “Tails & Tales” themed events throughout June and July

Registration is open for Central Arkansas Library System’s (CALS) annual Summer Reading Club. From June 14 to July 31, CALS will be offering weekly programs and contests for readers of all ages, including grab-and-go activities, socially distanced in-person events at various branches, and virtual events taking place on Facebook, YouTube, Zoom, and other digital platforms. To register and view the full calendar of “Tails & Tales” themed events, visit cals.org/summer-reading-club.
“Each summer, we look forward to developing programs that encourage reading and spark the imagination,” said Ellen Samples, CALS Youth Services Coordinator. “‘Tails & Tales’ is such a fun theme because there are so many great books we can explore at any age with tales about all sorts of tails—dogs, dinosaurs, and even mermaids.”
This year, summer reading participants can look forward to new activities, including a Virtual Pet Parade. To enter the pet parade, families can submit photos or videos of their pets from June 1 to 30, and submissions will be used to create a virtual pet parade that will be broadcast via the CALS Kids Facebook page on July 13 at 2 p.m. There are many other events, including Storytime Live featuring several guest readers, virtual fieldtrips, Bingoflix for the adults, and crafts, including DIY fairy houses.
Everyone who registers for Summer Reading Club is eligible to receive a free tote bag filled with goodies (while supplies last). There will be weekly drawings for prizes done at each branch. To be entered into the drawing, participants must earn a “badge.” Badges are earned by logging and reviewing books or movies as well as completing activities or attending virtual programs. And upon completion of the program, kids and teens will receive a free book.
“Summer should always be fun, but it’s important for kids to continue learning,” Samples added. “Summer Reading Club is a great combination of the two.”
