Speaking of Black History...
In honor of Black History Month, we introduce you to renowned opera singer Kristin Lewis. Lewis has been passionate about music for as long as she can remember. Though she did not graduate from an LRSD high school, her roots were shaped here in the District long before she rose to international acclaim as an opera singer. Lewis has captivated audiences worldwide by performing in celebrated venues across New York, Berlin, London, Paris, Rome, and Tokyo. Now based in Vienna, Austria, she has earned numerous prestigious awards, including induction into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame and as a Distinguished Alumni awardee by the University of Central Arkansas.
Fulbright Elementary’s K-2 students recently explored the book Knight Owl, a nominee for the AR Diamond Book Award. Their learning adventure continued with lessons all about owls. The experience ended on a high note with a visit from Rick Fields of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, who brought Gonzo the owl from the AR River Delta Nature Center. Students enjoyed an unforgettable, hands-on lesson that was truly a hoot!
Students at Little Rock Central High School are continuing Daisy Bates’ legacy through The Memory Project, an initiative that connects them with the oral history of civil and human rights. Their efforts were recently featured in a PBS blog and will be highlighted in the upcoming Arkansas PBS documentary, Unveiled: Daisy Bates and Johnny Cash. Through hands-on, intergenerational learning, these students are preserving and sharing powerful stories from the past. See the blog here.
