Forest Heights' Charlotte Stotts - Small but Mighty

Who says children can't make a big impact? Forest Heights STEM 5th grader Charlotte Stotts organized and raised over $1,000.00 for goods to create homeless care packages to donate to local organizations. Her sponsor says she spent many hours researching, planning, and organizing for this project. With help from the entire Jr. Beta Club, she was able to organize and stuff the bags.

Artistry in the Rock is a celebration and showcase of LRSD student talent in the performing and visual arts. The them of this year's showcase is "What If... A Kaleidoscope of Possibilities". Students created bodies of work with that exact question in mind, "What if?". The Fine Arts Department worked diligently to create a unique, virtual exhibition to showcase the many talents of our district's promising young artists. Click here to to view the illustrious work of our students, Pre-K-12.  Here's a little preview of their work here:

Storytime with Pastors -
Washington Elementary

The Little Rock School District is big on literacy! We are always looking for ways to get our students to develop a passion for reading. Storytime with Pastors is one of our many initiatives designed to instill that passion in our little ones. This week students at Washington Elementary were paid a visit from the faith-based community -  members volunteer to read to students as part of the Volunteers in Public Schools program. You can watch a video from that visit here.

Speaking of Reading Initiatives - Check Out Our Book Recommendation of the Month

We continue our student reading initiative where we send a student book recommendation to every elementary school media center each month. Students are encouraged to email Superintendent Mike Poore and pitch him their book suggestion. A photo like the one above will be displayed in a visible area in the media center to help get our students to develop a love for reading.

Teachers and parents, help get your students excited about the possibility of having their picture and book recommendation featured in their schools' media center for an entire month!  Additionally, the selected student's recommendation will also be prominently featured at the Hillary Clinton Children's Library.

This month's book recommendation, "Maya Angelou Poems", is by 4th grade Stephens Elementary student Kelsey Montgomery. During her interview, Kelsey explains in her own words what she loves about "Maya Angelou Poems" and why she feels a personal connection to this work.

Don't Forget... One Rock One Book Campaign Officially Underway!

One Rock One Book is an initiative where Pre-K -5th grade students across the district unite to read the same book. This year's book is Lunch Money by Andrew Clements for K-5; while pre-K students are reading Just Saving My Money by Mercer Mayer. These books teach students the importance of being financially responsible and saving at a young age. One Rock One Book 2022 will also give students a chance to compete by creating a food truck business plan.  If they win, they will be selected to work with a group of entrepreneurs to create Little Rock School District's very own food truck! For more information, watch the One Rock One Book promo video to learn how to get your student(s) involved!

Here's How Romine ECC Kicked Off
One Rock One Book at Their School

At Romine ECC, students kicked off their campaign with a visit from Marsha the Money Tree. A special thank you goes out to their community partner, Marsha Davis, Bank Manager at Centennial Bank. Students learned about saving and rocked out to “Because I’m Saving” along with  their dollar wearing Principal Tyrone Harris! Goals were set for the pre-K classes and Romine ECC's donations will go to Our House.
