The 6th and Final Poore Man on the Roof Campaign Exceeds Expectations

(Monday, January 31, 2022) Not just another day in the office for LRSD Superintendent Mike Poore.  Monday, culminating a 6-year run in providing food for local pantries, Poore took his final turn working from the roof of the District administration building, as part of the annual Poore Man on the Roof food drive – raising more than $50K worth of nonperishable food items and $20K plus in cash donations.  Poore asked students, staff, parents, and the community to step up to make this year’s relief effort bigger than his last, and donations “Poored” in.

Among the popular guests who joined him Monday on the roof, Rotary Club 99-member Aaron Lubin, Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott, Jr., City of Little Rock Chief Education Officer Dr. Jay Barth, State Representative Denise Ennett, LRSD Board members, City Year corps members, along with students and staff.  Since its inception in Little Rock, the food drive has benefited pantries at Helping Hand, the Church at Rock Creek, the Watershed, Mosaic Church, Saint Mark Baptist Church – and this year, Life Line Baptist Church in southwest Little Rock.

In addition to donating food to the cause named in his honor, Poore and his wife, Marianne, contributed $1,000 to help the District reach its goal.  Other large financial donations came from Cress-Riggs Caterpillar, Arvest Bank, Community Bank, and two schools – Otter Creek Elementary and Dunbar Magnet Middle School, that raised $700 and $500 respectively.  For a second year, Kroger donated $10,000 in gift cards. Corporate food donors included SSC Custodial Services, Middleton Heat and Air, Nabholz, and Metro Services, to name a few.

Poore reflected on his last food drive as superintendent, and what it means to the greater community during a time of the year when donations typically dry up.  He often became emotional, welling up with tears as all of the donations arrived in his office.  “This represents so much about how much the City of Little Rock cares,” said Poore.  “It’s a bittersweet moment.  This has been a ‘uniter’ for the for the City of Little Rock, I think.  People come together for this, and it’s become a tradition that I will miss.”

Proceeds will also benefit the Bright Future’s program and LRSD’s Volunteers in Public Schools (ViPS).  It is believed that prior to Monday’s event, well over $100,000 worth of food has been collected through successive Poore Man on the Roof campaigns.  Poore began promoting this cause while he was an educator in Colorado, continuing the effort in Bentonville, and now Little Rock, where it became affectionately known as Poore Man on the Roof.

Speaking of STEM - Arkansas Big Data Science Spent Some Time at Forest Heights This Week

UAMS faculty is sponsoring a data science outreach and research program to help stimulate a passion for data science in school-aged children. The goal is for students to consider data science as a future career which will ultimately aid in the development of a "data literate workforce for the jobs of the 21st Century." The Arkansas Big Data Science team paid a visit to the 7th grade classes at Forest Heights this past Wednesday. They raved about how impressed they were with our students. In the above pictures you can see the bar graphs and color heat maps students created to represent data they collected from a water model experiment. We are always excited when our kids are able to take advantage of opportunities such as these.

Community Theater Summer Arts Program

ACTing Up Summer 2022
June 13 - July 1
For rising 3rd-12th grade campers
REGISTRATION WILL OPEN ON MONDAY, JANUARY 17TH!

This summer, ACTing Up is back, and bigger than ever! For the first time, the camp will be expanded from two weeks to THREE WEEKS, and will culminate in a fully camper-produced show – DISNEY’S MOANA JR!

Week one of camp will be formatted much like past years – campers will rotate through daily classes in each of five performing arts areas of focus:
Musical Theater Dance: Instructed by Christen Pitts
Vocal Music: Instructed by Karen Q. Clark
Stage Acting: Instructed by Shelton Harden
Film Acting: Instructed by Warren McCullough
Stagecraft and Technical Theater (New for 2022!): Instructor TBD

Weeks Two & Three of camp will shift into rehearsal and production mode, with campers focused on their preferred “track” as they work together to produce Disney’s Moana Jr. for their family and friends! Students will rank their top choices for areas of focus from the following tracks:

PERFORMANCE: Choose this option if your child would most like to sing, dance and act as part of the production of Disney’s Moana Jr. Campers in this track will be cast in lead and ensemble roles in the final production, which will be presented at the end of camp.

STAGECRAFT & TECHNICAL THEATER: Choose this option if your child would like a hands-on intensive in making theatre magic! Campers in this “track” will build and paint sets, design and make costumes, learn about lights and sound, and create the world of Moana for the final production.

FILM ACTING AND PRODUCTION: If your child is most interested in what happens in front of -and- behind the camera to make movie magic, this is the track for them! Campers in this track will shoot, edit and host a behind-the-scenes look at “The Making of Moana”, which will be shared during the final performances of the show as well.

Camper drop-off is from 8:00am-8:30am daily.
Classes will be held from 8:30am-2:20pm.
Camper pickup is from 2:25pm-2:50pm daily.
Lunch and a snack will be served each day.
Each camper will receive an ACTing up 2022 t-shirt and other materials throughout camp.

MOANA JR Performances will be held June 29th – July 1st. Please note that the show will be double cast based on age – each camper will perform the show TWICE depending on which cast they are a part of. The daily schedule will change a bit on the final three days when performances are taking place, and those schedule changes will be announced at a later date.
