Another "Shout Out" to LRCH Junior
Khari Wiley!
Little Rock Central High Junior Khari Wiley is doing big things! She's part of an organization called Educators Rising that offers education and training programs to students across the nation. Wiley secured first place in the Educators Rising Region 6 Competition in both the job interview and educators rising moment categories, respectively. In addition to winning $600, she also has the chance to become a state representative! We are so proud of this exceptional young lady and look forward to her continued success!
Student Book Recommendation of the Month
Superintendent Mike Poore has started a student reading initiative where we will be sending a student book recommendation to every elementary school media center each month. Students are encouraged to email Mr. Poore and pitch him their book suggestion. A photo like the one pictured above will be displayed in a visible area in the media center to help get our students excited about reading. Teachers and parents, help get your students excited about the possibility of having their picture and book recommendation featured in their schools' media center for an entire month! Additionally, the selected student's recommendation will also be prominently featured at the Hillary Clinton Children's Library.
This month's book recommendation, "Wayside School", is by 5th grade Gibbs Magnet student Abigail Edwards.

LRSD Go Red Day Recap!
While last week's snowstorm painted the city white causing us to postpone our Go Red Day, LRSD students and staff excitedly donned their red apparel turning our district red for American Heart Month. We'd like to send a huge thank you to everyone for your participation. Your posts, selfies, and group pictures helped to raise awareness about the importance of taking better care of your cardiovascular health. If you haven't seen the flood of pictures and posts yet, search #LRSDGoesRed on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter to see the outpouring of support.
Stephens Elementary Receives Visit
From Furry/Feathery Friends
Big thank you to Class 37 Leadership Greater Little Rock for quite literally bringing the zoo to our students at Stephens Elementary. The group of community leaders stopped by to read a book about zoo animals to the children and in order to really get them engaged, they actually brought zoo animals along for their visit. In addition to all the fun with reading and zoo animals, Class 37 Leadership Greater Little Rock also donated personal care items to Bright Futures of Little Rock! Thank you so much, your generosity is greatly appreciated.
Happy Black History Month
For Black History Month we have been doing a weekly local legend spotlight. This week's Black History Month #locallegend is Dr. William H. Townsend who was the first African American licensed to practice optometry in Arkansas. In addition to playing a major role in the desegregation of downtown Little Rock in 1963, he was also the first African American elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives since the 1890s. We are so grateful for his service and the role he's played in making Little Rock and our nation a more equal place.
Happy National School Counseling Week
Happy National School Counseling Week! The role of a school counselor is integral to the success of any school. The provide support to students, staff, parents, and the community. They work tirelessly to ensure the needs of the populations the serve are met. Thank you to every school counselor in our district for your hard work and diligence. Your dedication ensures that our students, families, and staff get the services they need to be their best both on and off campus.
Happy International Day of
Women and Girls in Science!
February 11 is the International Day of Women and Girls in
Science. This U.N.-designated day aims to accelerate gender equity and
improve access to and participation in science for women and girls.
While the last few decades have produced many efforts to inspire women
and girls to engage in science, a gender gap remains. But, not for long, if LRSD has anything to do with it!

ACTing Up Summer 2022
June 13 - July 1
For rising 3rd-12th grade campers
REGISTRATION WILL OPEN ON MONDAY, JANUARY 17TH!
This summer, ACTing Up is back, and bigger than ever! For the first time, the camp will be expanded from two weeks to THREE WEEKS, and will culminate in a fully camper-produced show – DISNEY’S MOANA JR!
Week one of camp will be formatted much like past years – campers will rotate through daily classes in each of five performing arts areas of focus:
Musical Theater Dance: Instructed by Christen Pitts
Vocal Music: Instructed by Karen Q. Clark
Stage Acting: Instructed by Shelton Harden
Film Acting: Instructed by Warren McCullough
Stagecraft and Technical Theater (New for 2022!): Instructor TBD
Weeks Two & Three of camp will shift into rehearsal and production mode, with campers focused on their preferred “track” as they work together to produce Disney’s Moana Jr. for their family and friends! Students will rank their top choices for areas of focus from the following tracks:
PERFORMANCE: Choose this option if your child would most like to sing, dance and act as part of the production of Disney’s Moana Jr. Campers in this track will be cast in lead and ensemble roles in the final production, which will be presented at the end of camp.
STAGECRAFT & TECHNICAL THEATER: Choose this option if your child would like a hands-on intensive in making theatre magic! Campers in this “track” will build and paint sets, design and make costumes, learn about lights and sound, and create the world of Moana for the final production.
FILM ACTING AND PRODUCTION: If your child is most interested in what happens in front of -and- behind the camera to make movie magic, this is the track for them! Campers in this track will shoot, edit and host a behind-the-scenes look at “The Making of Moana”, which will be shared during the final performances of the show as well.
Camper drop-off is from 8:00am-8:30am daily.
Classes will be held from 8:30am-2:20pm.
Camper pickup is from 2:25pm-2:50pm daily.
Lunch and a snack will be served each day.
Each camper will receive an ACTing up 2022 t-shirt and other materials throughout camp.
MOANA JR Performances will be held June 29th – July 1st. Please note that the show will be double cast based on age – each camper will perform the show TWICE depending on which cast they are a part of.
