Highlights/Events

Mabelvale Student's Artwork Featured on "Poore Man on the Roof" Campaign

Congratulations to 10-year-old De'Jai Perry, Mabelvale Elementary, winner of the social media/art contest for Poore Man on the Roof. De'Jai's work will be featured in our promotional materials to help us spread the word about the food drive, February 1-11. If you know De'Jai, be sure to let her know how proud of her you are. Then, help us send Supt. Mike Poore to work from the roof on February 12th -predicted by McDermott students to be the coldest day of the year!


State’s Top AP Scholars Hail from LRCH

Congrats to former LRCH Tigers - Chuang Tang, Yale,  and Anika Moorjani, Georgia Tech - the top two AP Scholars in the state of Arkansas. Each year this award is presented to one male and one female student in each U.S. state and the District of Columbia with scores of 3 or higher on the greatest number of AP Exams, and then the highest average score (at least 3.5) on all AP Exams taken.
 

Annual Gibbs School Geography Bee

Fourth and fifth graders at Gibbs International Magnet School have been participating in the annual school level geography bee during International Studies class with Ms. Vicki Gonterman.  On Friday, January 18, nine students competed in the Finals Competition which resulted in the identification of 3rd place winner, 5th grader Quentin Sparks, and the two who would participate in the Championship round.  Fifth-grader Zora Key versus 4th grader Elizabeth Atkins answered questions in the exciting Championship Round.  Elizabeth Atkins emerged as the Gibbs Geography Bee Champion with Zora Key coming in second place.  Elizabeth will be taking a difficult test by the National Geographic Society via computer to see if she will be invited to participate in the state level bee on the UCA campus in Conway in the Spring.

Gibbs 2019 Science Fair

Gibbs 4th and 5th grade  budding scientists brought their project boards and materials to the cafetorium for judging Friday, Jan. 11.  Here are the results:

5th Grade Winners in Ms. Barbarotto’s class:  1st Place-A. Hansberry, K. 2nd Place –K. McMullin, and 3rd Place-E. Odena. 

Ms. Long’s class: 1st Place-W. Pemberton, 2nd Place-B. Washington, E. Skrodenis, and S. Edwards, and 3rd Place-Zora Key. 

4th Grade Winners in Ms. Davis’s class: 1st Place-D. Witsell, 2nd Place-A. Swaim, 3rd Place-K. Meredith, and Honorable Mention-Sadie Edwards. 

Mr. Nesmith’s class: 1st Place-O. Byrd, 2nd Place-L. Carter, and 3rd Place K. Williams.

Magic Show Reward for Jefferson Students Meeting Accelerated Reader Goals 

Congrats to all the students at Jefferson Elementary who met their Accelerated Reader goals!  They were rewarded with a magic show in the library by Aaron Acosta.  

Jefferson Elementary 2018-2019 Science Fair

Jefferson Elementary hosted its 2018-2019 science fair last week. Students placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the following categories: Physics, Math & Computer Science, Behavioral & Social Science, Zoology, Environmental Science, Earth & Planetary Science, Engineering, Health & Biochemistry, Food & Consumer Science, Energy & Transportation, and Chemistry.
Jefferson Elementary is proud to announce 3 overall winners for the science fair: Ruthie Vincent - 1st place for Hit the Ground Running; Lilla Gordy - 2nd place for Magic Memory; and Madison Mace - 3rd place for Fizz Fizz.
Congratulations to all the participants and the hard work that went into each project!


LRSD & UAMS Partner to Give STEM Education a Boost at Schools

This week, students in Mr. Paul Loyd's Central High science classroom were learning about ultrasound technology with hands-on demonstrations.  All thanks to a $1.27 million grant and a partnership between LRSD and UAMS to teach STEM education to our students,  hopefully, inspiring them to pursue related careers.

Henderson Middle's "SmartCane" Team at the 2019 Y.E.S Expo

The following teams represented LRSD in the 2019 Y.E.S. competition for Arkansas’ Top 25 finalists today during the 14th Annual Y.E.S. for Arkansas Expo Day, Park Plaza Mall, Little Rock.
•             The Ball Wall, Pinnacle View Middle School
•             Animation Nation, Pinnacle View Middle School
•             Sticks and Stones, Pulaski Heights Middle School
•             SmartCane, Henderson Middle School
Arkansas Capital’s Youth Entrepreneurship Showcase (Y.E.S.) for Arkansas 5th-8th grade business plan competition is one of the state’s best ways to introduce young Arkansans to entrepreneurship!
Y.E.S. is free and open to any 5th-8th grade student in Arkansas enrolled in school (public, private, home, virtual). Students in non-classroom-based youth programs are eligible to compete. A teacher or other responsible adult must sign on as team sponsor – and can sponsor multiple teams.
