LRSD celebrates the rich history, culture, and contributions of African Americans. This month is a time to reflect, learn, and honor the impact of Black leaders past and present.
Statement from Superintendent Dr. Jermall Wright
As superintendent, I believe it is essential to address issues that shape our school community and impact the experiences of our students and staff. With Black History Month winding down, I am reminded of the significance of this time to honor the contributions, struggles, and achievements of Black individuals throughout history and today. This month serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made and the great work that still lies ahead in creating a truly inclusive and equitable society.
When the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1788, its protections did not extend to everyone. Women, enslaved people, and those without property were not granted the same rights as others. Additionally, the Naturalization Act of 1790 restricted citizenship. Enslaved Africans were not even fully counted in population representation, illustrating the systemic barriers that existed. Over time, amendments such as the 13th, 14th, and 15th sought to address these inequities by abolishing slavery, ensuring equal protection under the law, and granting voting rights. However, the full realization of these rights has been a continuous journey and sadly, in 2025, many of these rights earned through blood, sweat, tears, and death remain threatened and at risk.
Recently, I received a communication from the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights that raised concerns about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in education. The letter suggested that such initiatives contribute to discrimination, which contradicts what we know to be true. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is not about exclusion or preference but rather about ensuring that all individuals—regardless of race, background, or identity—have equitable access to opportunities.
- D
-Diversity embraces individuals from
different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
- E
- Equity ensures everyone receives
the resources and support needed to succeed.
- I - Inclusion creates an environment where all voices are valued and respected.
These principles are foundational to a strong and supportive learning and working environment. They contribute to understanding, encourage respectful dialogue, and ensure every student and staff member feels seen and valued.
As we conclude Black History Month, I want to reaffirm my personal commitment to continue working to ensure that all students have access to a curriculum that reflects their history and experiences. This is not just an educational imperative; it is a moral imperative. We must stand firm in our commitment to fostering an inclusive learning and working environment that empowers every student and staff member to understand and appreciate the richness of our shared history.
While I do not speak on behalf of the LRSD Board of Education, I am confident that we are united in our mission to create a school environment where every student, regardless of background, can thrive.
No matter your race, gender, political affiliation, religious beliefs, or personal identity, you are a welcomed, valued, and respected member of the LRSD community. We will continue to uphold our commitment to ensure that all students and staff receive the support they need to succeed.
Thank you for being a part of this journey. Happy Black History Month!
