The Little Rock School District honors the legacy of Thelma Mothershed-Wair, who passed away at age 83 on October 19. As a member of the Little Rock Nine, Dr. Mothershed-Wair was among the first Black students to enroll at Little Rock Central High School in 1957, demonstrating extraordinary courage during the Civil Rights movement. In tribute, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff Saturday, recognizing Wair's profound impact on education and equality in Arkansas. Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church.

The Little Rock School District announced a new partnership this week with Baptist Health College Little Rock, aimed at expanding career opportunities for students in the healthcare field. Through a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program offered at Metropolitan Career Technical Center, students from six area high schools can gain hands-on clinical experience, earn healthcare certifications, and graduate workforce-ready. The initiative allows students to earn their high school diploma and an LPN license, preparing them for immediate employment or further studies. This collaboration exemplifies LRSD’s commitment to providing students real-world skills in high-demand fields. A special thanks to the Arkansas Office of Skills Development for providing more than $192,000 in funding so students may participate in the program FREE of charge!
Several LRSD schools were honored in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's 2024 Best of the Best Contest. Thanks to readers, Don Roberts and Jefferson Elementary were named runners-up for Best Public Elementary, Pulaski Heights Middle earned the top spot for Best Public Middle School, and Little Rock Central High was named Best Public High School. We’re proud of our schools and the incredible work of our students and staff, and we appreciate the community for recognizing them with their votes!
Kyndall Owens, an 11th grader at Hall-West High School of Innovation, represented Arkansas as a Delegate at the Congress of Future Medical Leaders at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. This event brings together top students aspiring to careers in medicine. Kyndall was also inducted into the prestigious Society of Torch & Laurel for her academic excellence during the event. Congratulations!
The Little Rock School District congratulates both Parkview High’s "The Nation" Marching Band and Southwest High’s S3 Marching Band for their stellar performances at the Arkansas Region I Marching Assessment, where each group achieved a superior rating. Parkview, one of only three schools performing in the “Show Style” tradition, now advances to the state competition. At the same time, Southwest celebrates its first-ever superior rating as it prepares for its 3rd Annual KranksGiving Battle of the Bands. We’re #LRSDProud of these students’ hard work and passion!

Wednesday marked the beginning of Red Ribbon Week in the Little Rock School District! Schools celebrate by participating in themed dress-up days promoting a drug-free lifestyle. With fun themes like Red Carpet RED-Y, Put a Cap on Drugs, Anything but a Cup Day, and Decades Day, students are encouraged to express their commitment to healthy choices. Schools across the District will participate in the annual Red Ribbon Rally at Riverfront Park this coming Wednesday.
The Little Rock School District showcased its innovative community school model at the Council of the Great City Schools Fall Conference. Highlighting efforts to address social-emotional learning (SEL) and wellness needs, LRSD also shared impressive retention rates, with 95% of novice teachers staying with the district. This participation underscores LRSD's commitment to supporting both students and educators.
Robert Diaz, who attends LRSD's School-Based Health Clinic Wakefield Future Smiles Dental Clinic, recently won a bicycle as part of the Diamond State Smiles Club. This initiative encourages children to attend regular dental checkups, with participants entered into a drawing for prizes like bicycles and athletic shoes. The Diamond State Smiles Club is supported by the Arkansas Oral Health Coalition and funded by the Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation.
Second-grade students from Stephens Elementary recently enjoyed an engaging field trip to the Historic Arkansas Museum, where they explored life in the early/mid-1800s. The hands-on experience included learning about blacksmithing, food preservation, wagon wheel construction, and the workings of a printing press. This visit provided the young learners a fun and educational glimpse into history.

The Little Rock School District, in partnership with the Arkansas Department of Health, is hosting its annual flu clinics at all LRSD schools. Students can receive the flu vaccine free of charge, but only with completed paperwork, including signed ADH and FERPA consent forms. The Little Rock School District offers a robust Advanced Placement (AP) program, allowing students to take college-level courses in high school. With 38 courses across 20 subjects, students can earn college credit by scoring 3 or higher on the national AP exams. ONE KOREAN, led by Chang Heon Lee, will host its 8th Annual Scholarship Banquet later this year. Since 2017, the organization has awarded scholarships to 146 students, totaling $146,000. This year, the goal is to provide scholarships to 30 more students while continuing donations to local Korean schools and community members in need.
