LRSD Mourns the Loss of Little Rock Nine Member Thelma Mothershed-Wair

The Little Rock School District honors the legacy of Thelma Mothershed-Wair, who passed away at age 83 on October 19. As a member of the Little Rock Nine, Dr. Mothershed-Wair was among the first Black students to enroll at Little Rock Central High School in 1957, demonstrating extraordinary courage during the Civil Rights movement. In tribute, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff Saturday, recognizing Wair's profound impact on education and equality in Arkansas. Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church.

LRSD Partners with Baptist Health College to Launch LPN Program for High School Students

The Little Rock School District announced a new partnership this week with Baptist Health College Little Rock, aimed at expanding career opportunities for students in the healthcare field. Through a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program offered at Metropolitan Career Technical Center, students from six area high schools can gain hands-on clinical experience, earn healthcare certifications, and graduate workforce-ready. The initiative allows students to earn their high school diploma and an LPN license, preparing them for immediate employment or further studies. This collaboration exemplifies LRSD’s commitment to providing students real-world skills in high-demand fields.  A special thanks to the Arkansas Office of Skills Development for providing more than $192,000 in funding so students may participate in the program FREE of charge!

LRSD Schools Recognized in 2024 Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's Best of the Best Contest

Several LRSD schools were honored in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's 2024 Best of the Best Contest. Thanks to readers, Don Roberts and Jefferson Elementary were named runners-up for Best Public Elementary, Pulaski Heights Middle earned the top spot for Best Public Middle School, and Little Rock Central High was named Best Public High School. We’re proud of our schools and the incredible work of our students and staff, and we appreciate the community for recognizing them with their votes!

Hall-West High School Student Nominated for Congress of Future Medical Leaders

Kyndall Owens, an 11th grader at Hall-West High School of Innovation, represented Arkansas as a Delegate at the Congress of Future Medical Leaders at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. This event brings together top students aspiring to careers in medicine. Kyndall was also inducted into the prestigious Society of Torch & Laurel for her academic excellence during the event. Congratulations!

Parkview and Southwest High School Bands 
Earn Superior Ratings

The Little Rock School District congratulates both Parkview High’s "The Nation" Marching Band and Southwest High’s S3 Marching Band for their stellar performances at the Arkansas Region I Marching Assessment, where each group achieved a superior rating. Parkview, one of only three schools performing in the “Show Style” tradition, now advances to the state competition. At the same time, Southwest celebrates its first-ever superior rating as it prepares for its 3rd Annual KranksGiving Battle of the Bands. We’re #LRSDProud of these students’ hard work and passion!

Parkview Students Named Finalists in Arkansas Peace Week Youth Art Contest

Congratulations to Parkview visual art students Lizbet Dominguez (11th grade) and Gabriela Duhart (9th grade) for being selected as finalists in the Arkansas Peace Week Youth Art Contest! Their incredible artwork stands out among students across the state, promoting peace and community through creative expression.

Red Ribbon Week Kicks Off with 
Themed Dress-Up Days

Wednesday marked the beginning of Red Ribbon Week in the Little Rock School District! Schools celebrate by participating in themed dress-up days promoting a drug-free lifestyle. With fun themes like Red Carpet RED-Y, Put a Cap on Drugs, Anything but a Cup Day, and Decades Day, students are encouraged to express their commitment to healthy choices.  Schools across the District will participate in the annual Red Ribbon Rally at Riverfront Park this coming Wednesday. 

LRSD Represents at the Council of the Great City Schools Fall Conference 

The Little Rock School District showcased its innovative community school model at the Council of the Great City Schools Fall Conference. Highlighting efforts to address social-emotional learning (SEL) and wellness needs, LRSD also shared impressive retention rates, with 95% of novice teachers staying with the district. This participation underscores LRSD's commitment to supporting both students and educators.

LRSD Student Wins Bicycle Through 
Diamond State Smiles Club

Robert Diaz, who attends LRSD's School-Based Health Clinic Wakefield Future Smiles Dental Clinic, recently won a bicycle as part of the Diamond State Smiles Club. This initiative encourages children to attend regular dental checkups, with participants entered into a drawing for prizes like bicycles and athletic shoes. The Diamond State Smiles Club is supported by the Arkansas Oral Health Coalition and funded by the Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation.

2nd Graders from Stephens Elementary Explore Life in the 1800s at Historic Arkansas Museum

Second-grade students from Stephens Elementary recently enjoyed an engaging field trip to the Historic Arkansas Museum, where they explored life in the early/mid-1800s. The hands-on experience included learning about blacksmithing, food preservation, wagon wheel construction, and the workings of a printing press. This visit provided the young learners a fun and educational glimpse into history.

LRSD Annual School Flu Clinics Continue

The Little Rock School District, in partnership with the Arkansas Department of Health, is hosting its annual flu clinics at all LRSD schools. Students can receive the flu vaccine free of charge, but only with completed paperwork, including signed ADH and FERPA consent forms. ONE KOREAN, led by Chang Heon Lee, will host its 8th Annual Scholarship Banquet later this year. Since 2017, the organization has awarded scholarships to 146 students, totaling $146,000. This year, the goal is to provide scholarships to 30 more students while continuing donations to local Korean schools and community members in need.

Metro Students Demonstrate Career Skills to Arkansas Department of Education Administration

Metro students showcased their hands-on career skills in areas like construction, welding, culinary arts, and cybersecurity to a visiting team from the Department of Education, including Secretary Jacob Oliva. The students impressed the visitors with their readiness for the workforce, highlighting the valuable training they receive at Metro. Metro Career Center provides high school students in Pulaski County with pathways to high-demand jobs, internships, apprenticeships, and post-secondary opportunities. We are proud of their achievements and dedication to shaping their future careers!

Watson Elementary GT Students Win Big at the Arkansas State Fair

Watson Elementary's Gifted and Talented students showcased their creativity at the Arkansas State Fair, earning top awards in the Creative Arts Competition. After an inspiring unit on the Ferris wheel, these talented students won multiple ribbons, including Best in Show, across various artistic categories. Their achievements highlight the dedication and imagination they brought to this unique project. Congratulations to these award-winning students!

Congratulations to Beth Som, the winner of LRSD's Social Media Contest! Beth has earned free parking and admission for four to the 2024 Arkansas State Fair. Thank you to the Arkansas State Fair for providing the tickets; we appreciate everyone who participated in the contest! Central High's Parade of Colors Caps Off 
Hispanic Heritage Month

Central High School concluded Hispanic Heritage Month with a vibrant Parade of Colors through the school halls. Students proudly wore traditional clothing, carried flags, and celebrated their cultural heritage. The parade brought the entire school together in a colorful display of pride and unity. A Spanish Folkloric Dance troupe also treated students to a special performance. It was a memorable way to end the month-long celebration!

Stephens Elementary Hosts
 "Bike with a Cop" Event

Stephens Elementary partnered with the Neighborhood Health Alliance for a Bike with a Cop Day earlier this month. Students and families enjoyed riding bikes with local police officers while connecting with community resources in a fun and engaging atmosphere. It was a fun-filled day of learning, safety, and engagement!

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Visits Carver STEAM Magnet Elementary

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus put on an exciting show for 5th-grade students at Carver STEAM Magnet Elementary this week. After the performance, students split into groups to learn different circus skills from the talented artists. To top off the experience, each student received a family pack of four tickets to attend the circus this weekend. Drummers from the circus will also join the LR Southwest band for a special  pre-game performance this evening. A big thank you to the circus for making this unforgettable experience possible!

Empowering Futures: LR Southwest High School's College Application Assembly

This week, Little Rock Southwest High School held a College Application Assembly for juniors and seniors. A panel discussing various college options provided valuable insights. At the same time, the school’s band, cheerleaders, and dance team energized the event with lively performances. Students also got to talk with some college representatives about future opportunities.

Community members gathered at Hall-West High School to discuss school year calendars, cell phone policies, and the district’s strategic planning. Next week’s meetings will continue the conversation at Henderson with Board Member Vicki Hatter, City Director Andrea Lewis, and Vice Mayor Kathy Webb, followed by Board Member Joyce Wesley and City Director Lance Hines at Roberts! Carver Students Engage in Starbase Training at Little Rock Air Force Base

Twenty-five Carver STEAM Magnet Elementary School fifth graders participated in a week-long Starbase training at Little Rock Air Force Base. This hands-on experience allowed students to explore STEM careers while developing teamwork, innovation, and excellence. Special thanks to Mrs. Lauren Green for organizing this enrichment opportunity!

Pinnacle View Middle School Goes Pink for 
Breast Cancer Awareness

In a display of support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, students and staff at Pinnacle View Middle School dressed in pink to raise awareness and promote solidarity in the fight against breast cancer. This initiative reflects the school community's commitment to making a positive impact and supporting those affected by this disease.

Dr. Sybil Jordan Hampton to Discuss Desegregation at Central High School

As part of the National Park Service Speaker Series, the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site will host Dr. Sybil Jordan Hampton on October 26, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Hampton, the first African American to graduate after attending all three years at Central High, will share her experiences with desegregation in the years following the 1957 crisis. This free public event provides a rare chance to hear Dr. Hampton's personal reflections on civil rights and education.
