Little Rock Nine Honored with
Inaugural Rotary Award

The Little Rock School District was well represented at Rotary Club 99 earlier this week when the remaining members of the Little Rock Nine were presented with the inaugural La Petite Roche Global Service Award.  We join Club 99 and the City of Little Rock in recognizing the trailblazers, who, as teenagers, caused a positive "ripple" for change when they integrated Central High School.  The inscription reads on the award:

"Like a single pebble that causes a wave of change, acts of kindness and courage have the power to create an impact that ripples through a community, nation, and even the world."

Honorees:
Dr. Melba Patillo Beals
Elizabeth Eckford
Ernest Green
Gloria Ray Karlmark
Carlotta Walls Lanier
Dr. Terrance Roberts
Minnie Jean Brown Trickey
Thelma Mothershed Wair

Parkview Students Share Stage With Tony and Grammy Award-Winning Singer & Actress

On Thursday, May 11, three Parkview High students had the opportunity to sing solos and share the stage with Tony and Grammy award-winning singer and actress Heather Headley. Additionally, the entire Parkview choir joined her onstage for a performance.

Senior Elizabeth Guerrero recounts, "My experience was amazing. Getting to see and perform with Heather Headley was truly a blessing; she was very welcoming, always smiling, and made the space feel safe."

"I believe that being in the arts can allow others to express their true talents without any shame, which allows students to feel that school is worth going to in the first place," said Junior Christian Seymour.

These students' experiences support the data that an arts education helps students thrive academically, promotes positive engagement at school, and keeps students working at the top level of Bloom's Taxonomy scale of analyzing, evaluating, and creating.

LRSD Alumni Sets Sights on 2023
 Miss Arkansas Scholarship Competition

We have much to celebrate as two LRSD graduates take on the 2023 Miss Arkansas Scholarship Competition. You may remember Little Rock Central High graduate Tania Kelley aka Nia Renee (Second from left), from her show-stopping performance on American Idol when she was only a senior in high school. So far, Tania has won the Preliminary Talent award and a $2000 scholarship to help further her education in music.

Blair Wortsmith (Far left), who also graduated from Central High, is also vying for the title. She recently volunteered her time and visited McDermott Elementary to meet with young students. Blair was named the Alpha and Overall Health and Fitness winner during the 2nd and 3rd nights of the pageant.

We are so proud of these young ladies and wish them the best! The competition began Sunday, June 4, with preliminaries held Tuesday through Thursday. The new Miss Arkansas will be crowned this Saturday, so let's support our very own.

Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com or the Robinson box office.

It will also be live streaming on missarkansas.org.

Chicot School-Based Health Clinic
Featured in UAMS News Story

Earlier this week, UAMS featured Chicot Elementary School-Based Health Clinic on its website. The article highlighted the 6th annual Leadership Day at Chicot, a student-led celebration of leadership for students, staff, and the school, and an opportunity to share the impact of Leader in Me and the 7 Habits.

On Leadership Day, two student leaders conducted tours of the health clinic. The website article states, "They rehearsed all last week and did an excellent job... Both students have been seen in the clinic and especially loved telling the community members about the stickers, prizes, and snacks they get when they visit the ACH clinic."

Fifth-grade students also benefited from collaborative talks with school counselors, nurses, and APRN Shaneika Lewis-Williams. In preparation for the visit, students were able to compile a list of questions in advance.

Partnerships such as these are important to the overall well-being of our students. We're excited about the opportunity to meet students and families where they are and to make access to quality healthcare a reality.
