Central 2023 Quiz Bowl Team Attended the National Academic Championship

The Little Rock Central High 2023 Quiz Bowl team attended the National Academic Championship preliminaries last weekend in New Orleans, LA. Over 150 of the best teams (top 15% in their respective states) from around the nation were invited to participate in one of four preliminary tournaments across the country.
The AAA state team was split into Central Gold and Central Black to compete in New Orleans. We're pleased to announce that the Central Gold team went 5-1 in the preliminaries and will be competing in the National Academic Championship finals on Google Meets on June 10 - 11.
The Central Black team had an excellent showing as well. They went 3-3 in the preliminaries and barely missed the final cutoff. They ranked at #20.

In Other News from Tiger Territory...
Central High had a record number
of students compete and win at the International Science and Engineering Fair
(ISEF) - the world’s largest pre-college international science
competition. The following nine students earned ISEF finalist awards at the
Central Arkansas Regional and Arkansas State Science Fairs: Ahmad Alam,
Geethika Atluri, Zaina Daaboul, Ahona Ghosh, Anu Iyer, Josh McNeil, Olya
Tryndyak, Bhavana Sridharan, and Siddharth Sridharan. These students
traveled to Dallas last month to participate in ISEF, competing against nearly 2,000 other high school students from around the globe.
Central
students won six ISEF Grand Awards (Siddharth Sridharan 4th in
Biochemistry, Bhavana Sridharan 3rd in Cellular and Molecular
Biology, Ahmad Alam 4th in Energy: Sustainable Materials and Design,
Josh McNeil 3rd in Engineering Technology: Statics and Dynamics, Anu
Iyer 2nd in Robotics and Intelligent Machines, and Geethika Atluri 4th
in Translational Medical Science) and four ISEF Special Awards (Anu Iyer
Honorable Mention form the American Acoustical Society, Siddharth Sridharan 1st
from the Air Force Research Laboratory, Zaina Daaboul 1st from Drug,
Chemical, and Associated Technologies Association, and Ahmad Alam won a
scholarship from UT Dallas).
We are so proud of these students, and we can’t wait to
see what scientific discoveries they make next!
An Amazing Educational Run
Congratulations also in order for Central's Mary Fleming, who won TCS’ ‘Team TCS Teachers’ Contest! Over 500 inspiring
applications were reviewed by the committee, and Ms. Fleming was selected to represent Team TCS in the 2023 TCS New York
City Marathon,
on Sunday, November 5, alongside a team of 50 educators across the United States
and Canada.
LRSD Student Named ACH Ambassador
LRSD salutes Londyn Giles - selected as an Arkansas Children's Hospital Ambassador. As part of this program, London, her mother, and her grandmother will have the honor of sharing their testimony on overcoming #autism. Your LRSD family is also proud of you, Londyn!
Martin Luther King Student Receives Scholarship to Attend Summer Karate Camp
For his hard work and dedication in the Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary Afterschool Karate Program, rising 6th grader Mikre'al Thompson received a scholarship to attend Unity Martial Arts' summer camps and classes at Unity for as long as he continues his training.
The scholarship is provided by Solid Stance for Unity and Community in partnership with MLK Jr. Elementary and Unity Martial Arts. We are all proud of Mikre'al's efforts, his leadership in the program, and his desire for growth and improvement.
Little Rock Central Art Students Recognized at Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts
Congratulations to the above group of students: Leah McCann, Sasha Bogan, Erin Elder, and Rebekah Jackson, who were honored at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts as a result of their participation in the Young Arkansas Artists Virtual Exhibit through AMFA. Additionally, freshman Sasha Bogan won Best in Class and Teachers Choice for her piece!

Mosaic Templars Cultural Center's
14th Annual Juneteenth Celebration

For 14 years, The Mosaic Templars Cultural Center has celebrated Juneteenth right in the heart of Little Rock at Historic W. 9th Street. June 17, 2023, MTCC will host this FREE day-long event featuring activities, vendors, food, arts, and entertainment for the whole family! Juneteenth in Da Rock is Arkansas' largest Juneteenth celebration, boasting over 5,000 attendees from across the state, with hundreds of participating vendors, performers, and sponsors.
This celebration allows the museum to engage the community in African Americans' rich history and culture. Organizers say they envision this event, attracting people of all backgrounds, will encourage them to join in celebrating freedom and the numerous contributions and accomplishments of African Americans. Jumpstart your weekends every Friday in June with an evening of art, fun, games, and music on the lawn at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts.
Games include Baggo, bocce ball, or Giant Jenga; plus - you can enjoy free outdoor art classes led by an instructor from the Wingate Art School. Space is limited for the approximately 30-minute class. Supplies are included.
The cherry on top of the sundae: you can visit the galleries or pick up some gifts from the Museum Store. AMFA stays open until 8 p.m.
