McClellan High School Baton-Passing Ceremony

On Wednesday, January 5th, the Little Rock School District and Southwest Little Rock community members gathered to celebrate the legacy of McClellan High School and the future that awaits future students who will attend the kindergarten through 8th grade school that will replace the nearly 60-year-old campus. The District hosted a Baton-Passing Ceremony to pay homage to the undeniable impact McClellan High had on the community, students, and staff, and to highlight what a new state-of-the-art facility will mean for the next generation.

The crowd included McClellan alum, students from Cloverdale Middle, and Baseline and Meadowcliff elementary schools. The attendance and participation of those students is particularly noteworthy as they are the incoming generation who will be assigned to the new K-8. The program consisted of touching firsthand accounts from alum like noted journalist John Brummett, City Director Antwan Phillips and LRSD teacher Portia Casey, explaining how McClellan impacted their lives. Future K-8 students  also excitedly expressed hopes for their new school. LRSD celebrates the rich history of McClellan and  looks forward to continuing the legacy of educational excellence. Check out the video from the ceremony in the link below as well as a related news article.

LRCH Junior Insherah Qazi Named Among PBS News Hour's
 "20 Under 20 Up-and-Coming Storytellers"!

A huge LRSD congratulations to Insherah Qazi on making PBS News Hour's Student Reporting Labs inaugural list of 20 Under 20 Up-and-Coming Storytellers! As we all know, 2020 was a year filled with multitudinous challenges. Although often overshadowed by adults, the media, and major publications, young people covered these unprecedented times through their own words. PBS decided to recognize these young storytellers through their 20-Under-20 list and Insherah's work landed her a spot on their list. You can watch the story she produced on the newly reconstituted LRSD school board here.

LRSD Alum Continues to do Great Things!

You may remember LRCH graduate Tania Kelley aka Nia Renee  from her show-stopping performance on American Idol when she was only a senior in high school. Now as a freshman at the University of Central Arkansas, Tania continues carving out her path of excellence by winning the Miss UCA 2022 scholarship competition. In addition to bringing home the crown, Kelley also won Best Vocal or Instrumental Performance, earning a total of $6,300 in scholarships! Majoring in Vocal Performance, Kelley is extremely passionate about her craft and encourages youth to participate in art programs that will aid them in reaching their fullest potential. We are so proud and excited to witness her accomplish her goals.

Shout Out also to LRCH's Richard Liu!

Senior Richard Liu also continues to bring in accolades! National Merit Scholar, Debate Champion, and now - newly selected delegate in the United States Senate Youth (USSY) Program!  The USSY program gives outstanding high school students interested in pursing careers in public service the amazing opportunity to learn about the work of the United States government. Only two students are selected from each state and Liu was one of  those two delegates! Delegates will hear major policy addresses by senators, cabinet members, a justice of the US Supreme Court, and even the president of the United States! They will also be awarded a $10,000 college scholarship for their undergraduate studies.  Way to go, Richard - continued success as you embark on your educational journey!

Terry Elementary Honors Past Media Specialist

Members of the Terry Elementary Staff along with family, colleagues, and friends gathered to celebrate the life and contributions of long-time Terry Elementary Media Specialist, Teresa Cook. Mrs. Cook oversaw the first library opened at Terry and helped design and open the beautiful new Media Center at the school.  She was loved and admired by so many and the school was honored to accept a contribution in her memory to purchase new books for Terry’s Media Center!

Speaking of Books  - Major Shout Out to Kellogg Corporation for  Donating Hundreds of Books to LRSD Middle Schools

We are sending a huge thank you to Kellogg for donating 250 books to Mabelvale Middle School. Students who were caught doing good were given passes to come and pick out a brand new book to take home and keep! Can you believe all 250 books are gone! We are so appreciative of our corporate partners who continue to pour into our students and schools!

Community Theater Summer Arts Program

ACTing Up Summer 2022
June 13 - July 1
For rising 3rd-12th grade campers
REGISTRATION WILL OPEN ON MONDAY, JANUARY 17TH!

This summer, ACTing Up is back, and bigger than ever! For the first time, the camp will be expanded from two weeks to THREE WEEKS, and will culminate in a fully camper-produced show – DISNEY’S MOANA JR!

Week one of camp will be formatted much like past years – campers will rotate through daily classes in each of five performing arts areas of focus:
Musical Theater Dance: Instructed by Christen Pitts
Vocal Music: Instructed by Karen Q. Clark
Stage Acting: Instructed by Shelton Harden
Film Acting: Instructed by Warren McCullough
Stagecraft and Technical Theater (New for 2022!): Instructor TBD

Weeks Two & Three of camp will shift into rehearsal and production mode, with campers focused on their preferred “track” as they work together to produce Disney’s Moana Jr. for their family and friends! Students will rank their top choices for areas of focus from the following tracks:

PERFORMANCE: Choose this option if your child would most like to sing, dance and act as part of the production of Disney’s Moana Jr. Campers in this track will be cast in lead and ensemble roles in the final production, which will be presented at the end of camp.

STAGECRAFT & TECHNICAL THEATER: Choose this option if your child would like a hands-on intensive in making theatre magic! Campers in this “track” will build and paint sets, design and make costumes, learn about lights and sound, and create the world of Moana for the final production.

FILM ACTING AND PRODUCTION: If your child is most interested in what happens in front of -and- behind the camera to make movie magic, this is the track for them! Campers in this track will shoot, edit and host a behind-the-scenes look at “The Making of Moana”, which will be shared during the final performances of the show as well.

Camper drop-off is from 8:00am-8:30am daily.
Classes will be held from 8:30am-2:20pm.
Camper pickup is from 2:25pm-2:50pm daily.
Lunch and a snack will be served each day.

MOANA JR Performances will be held June 29th – July 1st. Please note that the show will be double cast based on age – each camper will perform the show TWICE depending on which cast they are a part of.
