Here's How Romine ECC Gave Thanks
Each student received a survival baggie with items that are representative of items the Pilgrims and the Native Americans used to celebrate Thanksgiving. Listed below you can find the significance of each item in the baggie:
Tiny Twist Pretzels – The pretzels represent praying hands. The pilgrims prayed for a place they could go to be free to worship the way they wanted to. They prayed for protection on their trip across the ocean and for help in the new land.
Stick Pretzel – The pilgrims cut down trees and used logs to build their homes.
Mini Marshmallows – Reminds us of snow and the first winter in the new land in which only half the pilgrims survived.
Gold Fish Crackers – Squanto showed the pilgrims how to grow corn by placing four seeds into a little mound of earth and placing fish around the seeds.
Fruit Loops – Squanto taught the pilgrims where to find wild berries and fruits and how to dry them for the winter.
What a cute way to teach students the history of the Thanksgiving holiday!

Congrats to LR Southwest's Raven Brown
We are so proud of LR Southwest girls basketball guard Raven Brown who was voted SBLive's Arkansas High School Athlete of the Week for November 15-21! Raven played an amazing game against Hall High Tuesday night scoring 15 points. She also scored 18 points in Southwest's Friday night game against e-Stem. Brown received a whopping 55.35% of the 35,000 votes tallied this week! How amazing is that? We look forward to continue watching Raven Brown dominate the court!
LR Central's Debate Coach Joseph Kieklak
Earns National Distinction!
We would like to send a huge congratulation Central High debate coach Joseph Kieklak for earning the Donus D. Roberts Coaching Excellence Award! In order to receive this remarkable achievement, Mr. Kieklak had to earn 10,000 coaching points. Coaches earn one point of every merit point earned by their students through competition, service, and leadership activities. We are so proud of you, Mr. Kieklak, for this outstanding recognition. All of the hard work you pour into coaching the LRCH debate team does not go unnoticed.

LRSD Hosts Inaugural Holiday Tournament Honoring Memory of Beloved Coach "Rip"
In just one week, LRSD's Athletic Department will host one of the most exciting and competitive basketball events in the city - and perhaps the state, the inaugural “Charles Ripley Holiday Basketball Tournament.” The tournament will be held December 9-11, 2021 at Little Rock Southwest High School, 9715 Mabelvale Pike. Tip off for the first game between the LRSW Gryphons and the Hall High Warriors is 4 p.m.
Other tournament participants include teams from Central, Parkview, Pine Bluff, Bryant, Hot Springs and Mills high schools.
Affectionately known as Coach "Rip", Ripley was a beloved mentor and basketball coach, serving nearly three decades as coach at Parkview High School. He led his Patriot teams to five state titles over the course of his tenure.
"We are honored to host this event in memory of Charles Ripley and have worked hard to make sure this will be a tournament that Coach Ripley would be proud of. COVID has limited our opportunities over the past nearly two years, and we are ready for an electrifying comeback," said LRSD Athletic Director John Daniels. More information about "Coach Rip" and his legacy will be in the tournament program.
"We would like to thank Principal Marvin Burton and his staff for allowing us to host the tournament at the beautiful, new Gryphon Arena, as well as Mr. Rene’ Julian and First Community Bank for graciously serving as our presenting sponsor," said Daniels.
Daniels also expressed gratitude to the other sponsors supporting this effort: First Community Bank, Corky’s, Casa Manana, SportStop, and Gadberry Financial.
Unless guests have a "AAA" pass, tickets are $10.00 each day and will allow admission for four (4) games per day. All proceeds will benefit the LRSD Athletic Foundation. Among other efforts, the LRSD Athletic Foundation provides athletic opportunities to 6th graders that are not funded by the LRSD.

The Legacy of Dunbar Magnet Middle is on
Display at Mosaic Templars Cultural Center
Major shoutout to the Dunbar Bobcats and their legacy of excellence. For those of you who may not know, Dunbar Middle has a legacy as rich as Central High. Originally an all black high school, Dunbar was once known as the premier source of Black education in the entire state of Arkansas. Dunbar opened in 1929 and was named after Paul Laurence Dunbar, a highly renowned African-American Poet.
After the construction of LR Central High in 1927, School Board member G. DeMatt Henderson, Sr., put in the work necessary to secure a grant from Sears, Roebuck & Co. and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald for the construction of a new educational facility for the city's African-American students. Dunbar is special in that it is one of the few, fully functioning facilities out of the nearly 5,000 schools for African-Americans in the South financed by the Julius Rosenwald fund.
Today, Dunbar is a thriving middle school under the leadership of principal Eunice Thrasher. We are so proud of Dunbar's history and legacy and encourage our LRSD community to go out and check out the exhibit.
Booker Arts Magnet Students Audition for Season 3 of Blueberry's Clubhouse
Best of luck to Booker Arts Magnet Students Zuri Parson (3rd grade) and Amiah Bryant (4th grade) who recently submitted video auditions for season 3 of Arkansas PBS’s show, Blueberry’s Clubhouse. A partnership between the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts and Arkansas PBS, Blueberry’s Clubhouse follows a fun-loving, curious puppet guide on adventures throughout the Natural State. Created for pre- K-2nd grade children out of school for the summer months, this original, Emmy winning TV series allows young viewers to learn and play alongside Blueberry and her friends. Season 3 will air Summer 2022. Follow this link to view a season 2 episode of Blueberry’s Clubhouse, which aired Summer 2021 and featured Booker Arts Magnet student Major Banks IV in the role of “Miles”.

Ms. Diana Rodriguez's pre-K3 students have been reading the book, "The Clean Up Surprise", and it inspired them to take on a project that required a little creativity and recycling. Students used recycled items to create a product with their families.

Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, located on the corner of Broadway and historic Ninth Street in downtown Little Rock, has for years, been host to two special December events: Cocoa and Carols and the Say It Ain't Say's Sweet Potato Pie Contest. This year, these events are combined into one Holiday Open House extravaganza.
Join the fun for music, crafts and a certain Jolly Old Elf (aka “Black Santa”), for a festive Sunday at the museum. Loblolly Creamery is sponsoring the cocoa at the event.
And if you’re in the area before Dec. 3, feel free to drop off a new unopened toy for the Robert “Say” McIntosh Stop the Violence Toy Drive in partnership with Central Arkansas Library Systems.

Ballet Arkansas Nutcracker Spectacular Coming Soon....
A holiday tradition for families across Arkansas, "The Nutcracker Spectacular" is the largest and longest-running holiday production in the state - reaching more than 10,000 in a single weekend! Performances include live accompaniment from the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and a community cast of more than 250 singers and dancers. Student Matinee performances available for reservation.
