Four LRSD Schools Recognized for Excellence in Statewide Performance and Growth Program

The Little Rock School District is proud to be recognized in the Arkansas School Recognition Program for high student performance and growth. Four LRSD schools—Forest Park, Jefferson, Roberts, and Wakefield Elementary—earned a combined total of $331,065.70 in recognition funds. These awards highlight the dedication of our students, teachers, and families in achieving academic excellence. Congratulations to all!

Celebrations Also in Order for
 Dunbar and LR Southwest

According to the 2024 post appeals annual statewide student assessment data, LR Southwest and Dunbar have met the 95% federal participation requirement and are no longer assigned a Participation Plan of Support. Per ESEA, schools are expected to meet federal participation requirements by testing at least 95% of all subgroups for ELA or Math. Schools that do not meet the participation requirements for two or more consecutive years or that do not show sustained improvement in meeting the 95% participation rate are placed on a Participation Plan of Support with the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). 


LRSD Recognizes Schools for 
Outstanding Customer Service

The Little Rock School District is committed to providing excellent customer service to students, families, and the community. A recently implemented secret shopper-style program is helping us assess and improve service across our schools. This month, LRSD recognized Chicot Elementary, Fair Park Early Childhood Center, Jefferson Elementary, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership and Language Magnet Academy, and Watson Elementary for going above and beyond. Thank you to these schools for setting a standard of service for our stakeholders!

LRSD Seniors Earn Top Honors in Thea Foundation Scholarship Competition

Four seniors from the Little Rock School District have been recognized in the 2024/2025 Thea Foundation Scholarship Competition, earning a combined total of $29,000 in scholarships. Inspired by the theme “Fluidity,” the competition drew 300 applicants from across Arkansas, showcasing artistic talent in various disciplines. Disha Ram (Central) won 1st place in Creative Writing, and Addisyn Cain (Central) took 1st place in Film. Olya Tryndyak (Central) placed 5th in Performing Arts, while Aniya Foster (Parkview) placed 10th in Performing Arts. Their achievements highlight the incredible talent and dedication of LRSD students in the arts. Congratulations to these seniors!

A Night of Fun and Fashion at the 
Carver-Washington Sneaker Ball

The Carver and Washington communities came together for a night of fun and fashion at the Carver-Washington Sneaker Ball. Students, families, and staff filled the dance floor, celebrating the upcoming merger of the two schools. The event showcased the excitement surrounding the new Carver-Washington STEAM Magnet Elementary, set to open in August. Families can register now on the LRSD website to be part of this new chapter.

King Students Celebrate Chinese New Year with Culture and Learning

Students at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership and Language Magnet Academy welcomed the Year of the Snake with a lively Chinese New Year celebration. The event featured a parade, a fashion show, a music performance, and a martial arts demonstration. As part of King’s new language magnet program, students proudly showcased their Mandarin skills and cultural knowledge. It was a festive and engaging way to bring learning to life!

Little Rock Central High School Celebrates the Year of the Snake with New Year Festivities

The LRCH Chinese Program and Chinese Club celebrated the Lunar New Year with engaging activities that embraced cultural traditions. Students participated in calligraphy, writing Good Fortune and Happy New Year, as well as creating intricate paper cuttings to welcome the Year of the Snake. The festivities continued with a Chinese New Year party, featuring delicious food, drinks, and fun cultural games. Wishing everyone a joyful and prosperous Year of the Snake!

Rockefeller Early Childhood Center Celebrates the 100th Day of School with a Parade

Rockefeller Early Childhood recently celebrated their 100th day of school with a fun-filled parade. Students dressed as centenarians, while others displayed creative posters and shirts adorned with 100 objects. This exciting event marked a milestone in the school year, highlighting both learning and creativity. It was a memorable way for students to reflect on the progress they've made so far!

Lacey Academy Beta Clubs Excel 
at Arkansas State Convention

The Dr. Marian G. Lacey Academy Beta Clubs, consisting of Elementary and Junior High members, recently represented LRSD at the Arkansas State Beta Convention. Students competed in categories such as Living Literature, Robotics, Speech, and academic tests in subjects like Math, Computer Science, and Spelling. Several Lacey students earned top placements and qualified for the National Beta Convention in Orlando this summer. Congratulations to these students!

Mabelvale Elementary Students Explore Culinary and Math Skills with Apple Seed Teaching Farm

Mabelvale Elementary students recently put their culinary and math skills to the test with the help of Apple Seed Teaching Farm. The students prepared a healthy side dish featuring kale, sweet potatoes, turnips, and a touch of garlic. They measured ingredients and practiced math while creating a nutritious meal. Parents are encouraged to try this delicious recipe at home!

Playing Stock Market Games Pays Big Dividends for LRSD Middle School!

Congratulations are in order for: Dylan Hoang Nguyen, Jacy Benefield, Shawaiz Shahid Abro and Amr Gazwan Husseini. This team won first place in The Stock Market Game Fall 2024 Regional.
The photos are from the Awards Luncheon held at the Clinton Presidential Library on 1/23/25.
They were awarded a cash prize, a trophy for the school and a certificate. This competition had the most teams in the history of the competition. There were over 7000 students that participated. Mr. Graham Goodloe's classes at Pinnacle View have placed first or higher in this competition over 20 times and counting. 
We are currently competing in the Spring and Yearlong competitions. We hope to make a return to the winner's circle. Each team is given $100,000 of virtual money to invest in the actual market. The team with the most money at the end of the competition is the winner.
Elementary Students Shine at LRSD's Annual Elementary Spelling Bee

Little Rock Southwest High School hosted the buzzing excitement of LRSD’s annual Elementary Spelling Bee! After months of preparation, students competed for the coveted title of top speller. Congratulations to Aleen Fatima from Don Roberts Elementary for winning first place and Humza Ali from Forest Park Elementary for earning second place. These students along with the other talented participants truly made their schools proud!  All will have an opportunity to represent LRSD at the County Spelling Bee.  Crossing our fingers for you!  

Carver STEAM and Washington Elementary Student Leaders Unite for Future Academy

Last week, student leaders from Carver STEAM Magnet School and Washington Elementary visited each other’s campuses to explore their unique programs and opportunities. These visits are part of the schools' preparation to combine into the Carver-Washington STEAM Magnet Academy next school year. These student leaders and their classmates enjoyed campus tours and interactive events, creating excitement about the transition. The new academy promises to bring expanded STEAM opportunities for all students.

Volunteers Make a Difference at McDermott Elementary on Day of Service

Volunteers gathered at McDermott Elementary for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service this past weekend. Their efforts brought visible improvements to the campus and completed projects benefiting the surrounding community. Board Member Greg Adams, Stefanie Vestal, Sky Brower, and numerous volunteers dedicated their time and energy to making a positive impact. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this inspiring day of service!

Superintendent Highlights Watson Elementary Educator as a Model Teacher

During a recent visit to Watson Elementary, LRSD Superintendent Dr. Jermall Wright observed 3rd-grade teacher Ronisha "Niki" Johnson delivering an exceptional math lesson. Dr. Wright described her instruction as "phenomenal," noting her thorough planning, use of academic language, and ability to engage students in meaningful math discussions. He praised her intentional strategies to support English Language Learners and students with disabilities, calling her lesson a model of excellence. Thank you, Ms. Johnson, for your dedication to student success!

Officer Tommy Norman Surprises
Stephens Elementary Student with a School Visit

Stephens Elementary had an inspiring moment during its Honor Assembly when Officer Tommy Norman from the North Little Rock Police Department made a surprise visit. The visit was sparked by Tyairah Cleaver, a fifth-grade student, who wrote to Officer Norman asking him to speak about gun violence and drug prevention. To Tyairah’s surprise, he kept his promise and delivered a powerful message to the entire school, encouraging students to make positive choices. Thank you, Officer Norman, for empowering our students and making this day unforgettable (and for coming across the river )!

Superintendent Dr. Jermall Wright Highlights Educators' Efforts During "Data/Work Day"

Superintendent Dr. Jermall Wright visited Gibbs International Magnet and Horace Mann Middle School to observe teachers in action during "Data Day." Educators used the time to analyze recent student assessment data and plan targeted lessons to meet individual student needs. Principal Greenwood led meaningful discussions at Gibbs while teachers at Mann collaborated on small-group and personalized learning strategies. These efforts reflect LRSD’s commitment to improving student outcomes through intentional and focused planning.

LRSD Staff Present at City Year Little Rock's Education Equity Summit

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, LRSD staff members played a key role at the City Year Little Rock Education Equity Summit held at Henderson. They led discussions on important issues, including systemic racial disparities and social determinants of health, while sharing innovative strategies for advancing equity in education. The summit brought together AmeriCorps members, LRSD staff, and community stakeholders to collaborate on solutions for creating a more equitable future. LRSD is proud to have its team leading efforts to foster meaningful change in education.

The Little Rock School District had the privilege of appearing on the popular Broadway Joe Morning Show on Power 92.3FM! LRSD grant writer Linda Young and Southwest High Principal George Maxey joined the conversation to highlight what sets LRSD apart, including over $52 million in grant funding secured last year. These funds support innovative programs and new magnet themes, offering even more opportunities for students across the district. Second-grade students at Mabelvale Elementary gained a deeper understanding of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s impact on history during lessons last week. They learned about the March on Washington and its role in the civil rights movement. This meaningful instruction helped students connect with Dr. King's legacy just in time for the holiday.

The Little Rock School District offers a robust Advanced Placement (AP) program, allowing students to take college-level courses in high school. The Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) invites young artists in grades 9-12 to participate in "Imagining Black Futures: Young Artists Envision Afrofuturism." This community event encourages students to explore Black identity, autonomy, and liberation through various art forms, including painting, photography, videography, and more.
