Ambassadors from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership and Language Academy represented the District well during a special tribute to the late civil rights leader at the governor’s mansion earlier this week. 
  Way to go, students!  

Little Rock School District Achieves 
Significant Literacy Milestone

The Little Rock School District has reached a major milestone with the latest ATLAS assessment results, surpassing the performance threshold set by Ark. Code Ann. § 6-15-2913. The Arkansas Department of Education confirmed that LRSD’s scores no longer require additional Coordinated Support from the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education. This progress means LRSD is no longer obligated to participate in quarterly Act 1082 check-ins with the district support unit. Superintendent Dr. Jermall Wright credited the achievement to the dedication of students, families, and educators, emphasizing the district’s commitment to continued academic growth.

 Central High School Teacher Receives Prestigious Presidential Award

Dr. Mary "Beth" Maris, Central High School Science Chair, has been honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This national recognition celebrates her outstanding contributions to STEM education and her dedication to inspiring students. The award includes a certificate signed by President Biden, a $10,000 prize, and an invitation to a future ceremony in Washington, D.C. Dr. Maris’s achievement reflects the exceptional talent and leadership found at Central High School.

Higher Education Ambassador Encourages
LRSD Students to Take Advantage of
ACT Prep Program

John Baylor, CEO of On to College, visited Central and Southwest High Schools this week to empower students with tools to improve their ACT scores. Funded by a grant from the Arkansas Department of Education, the program offers engaging English, Math, Reading, and Science lessons. These resources help students boost scores, secure scholarships, and open doors to their dream colleges. LRSD high school students can connect with their counselors to learn more about this exciting opportunity.

Chicot Elementary Students Get a Lesson in Financial Literacy with First Security Bank

Students at Chicot Elementary are gaining real-world financial skills thanks to a partnership with First Security Bank and the Arkansas Securities Department. This week, students got a visit from the bank mascot, Penny Pockets, and were introduced to saving, money management, and the difference between needs and wants. Fifth-grade students will soon take on leadership roles as tellers as campus branches continue to expand at LRSD, building valuable skills for the future.

Rockefeller Students Enjoy Musical Fun 
with the Quapaw Quartet

Rockefeller Early Childhood Center’s 4-year-old classes had a special visit from the Quapaw Quartet of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Students learned about the viola, violin, and cello during an engaging presentation. The excitement continued as students got hands-on experience playing some of the instruments. A special thanks to the Quapaw Quartet for bringing music to life for our young learners!

Pinnacle View Band Inspires Future 
Musicians at Fulbright Elementary

The Pinnacle View Middle School Band 1 made a special visit to Fulbright Elementary to recruit budding musicians. Students learned about the excitement of joining a band while also getting to play with some of the instruments. This visit was a perfect example of students encouraging each other to achieve great things!

McDermott Elementary and City Year Little Rock invite the community to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by donating blood at their Mobile Blood Drive, hosted by Our Blood Institute. The event happens on Saturday, January 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McDermott Elementary. Your donation is especially vital due to the recent winter weather’s impact on blood supplies. LRSD Reschedules January Board Meetings 
Due to Inclement Weather

Due to inclement weather, the Little Rock School District has rescheduled this month’s Board meetings. The Agenda/Work Session meeting will now take place on January 16, 2025, at 5:30 p.m., and the Board meeting will be held on January 30, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. Both meetings will be hosted in the LRSD Boardroom at 810 W. Southwest High Senior Excels in Welding 
and Earns Certification

Bryan Rosas, a senior at Southwest High School, is proving the power of hard work and determination. At 18, he balances school with a weekend night shift at Lexicon, where his welding skills have already earned him a scholarship for top performance on their welding simulator. Recently, Bryan achieved his Class B welder certification, a significant milestone. After graduation, he plans to continue working at Lexicon while advancing his skills at Pulaski Tech.

LRSD Partners with UAMS on $1.9 Million 
School Safety Initiative

LRSD is teaming up with UAMS to launch the Little Rock Violence Intervention and Safety Innovative Outreach Network (LR VISION), funded by a $1.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. This program will introduce advanced safety measures like behavioral threat assessments, campus digital mapping, and trauma-informed training for staff. With support from community partners, LR VISION aims to continue creating safe and supportive environments for students and staff.
