Highlights/Events
Members of the State
Board of Education will wrap up public meetings this Tuesday regarding the
future status of the Little Rock School District. The public will have the
opportunity to provide input regarding potential next steps for the district.

LRSD hosted the “50 Fantastic Dads” luncheon for fathers and father figures, who participated in the “Dads Take Your Child to School on the First Day” photo contest. Community partners donated door prizes for the event. Hats off to these gentlemen who are active in the lives of their students! Congrats to top 3 vote getters:

Central
East Cluster a Hit!
King Elementary hosted the Central East Cluster of the
Parent and Family Engagement Event recently. The Teacher of the Year for
Middle Schools, Ms. Carolyn Powell-Johnson, joined the Executive Director for
Elementary Schools as speakers. Music was provided the G-Music (former Minors
in Music, Art Porter Music Education, Inc.). Attendees were treated to a great
evening!
The Southwest Cluster
event was also a big hit this past Saturday at the Outlets of Little Rock.

AAPI
Awards LRSD Students for Academic Excellence
The
American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) awarded students for
their academic excellence and service to the local and/or global community. Awards
ranged from $500 to $1,500 with one special recognition of $2,500. Parkview’s
Nya Love and J.A. Fair’s Nadin Lopez, Page Poindexter and Shikaya Woods (from
left to right) were all winners! AAPI represents the interests of 100,000
physicians of Indian origin in the USA and is one of the largest professional
medical societies in the USA.
Making
Great Music at Dunbar – Thanks to Generous Gift
The Dunbar
Band would like to thank the family of former saxophonist, Jenna Rhodes, for
donating two lovely saxophones! These horns will be used by Ciara Smith and
Adrian Hill, two very deserving students who will flourish this year thanks to
the generosity of this family. The Dunbar Band Family is eternally grateful and
honored to carry on the musical legacy of Jenna Rhodes.

Grand Opening of
"Kid Inventor" Exhibit at Museum of Discovery: "Kid Inventor" encourages children to design,
test and build unique creations using a variety of materials and technologies.
The exhibit features a build area, a tech studio and a section called
"spare parts." Access to the exhibit is included in general
admission. The museum is open from 9-5 p.m. Read more about

Labor Day Food Truck
Party at The Rail Yard: Enjoy live music all day long, play outdoor games and chow down
on tons of good food. The fun goes from 11 a.m.-10 p.m., so swing
by anytime to grab some food. Food trucks include Count Porkula, Tacos Godoy,

Lake Maumelle Boat
Tour at Westrock Marina: Venture
out to experience a tour on Lake Maumelle with a park interpreter. Enjoy scenic
views and lessons on ecology and history. Chose from at 1 p.m. or 3
p.m. tour. Tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for ages 6-12 and free for

Labor Day Festival
at Bass Pro Shops: Swing by Bass Pro for free food and free fun! Try games like the
ring toss and bean bag toss, participate in holiday sign decorating and get in
line for face painting. There's also free hot dogs and funnel cake for everyone
to enjoy! The fun goes from noon-5 p.m. Saturday and noon-4

Adventure at the Big Maumelle Boat Launch: Paddle your way through Pinnacle's majestic lowland river

teachers) and $40 per high school student.
The
workshop will introduce the fundamentals of game development using the Unreal
Engine 4 game engine and its Blueprints visual scripting system. It will
consist of several lessons, each consisting of a step-by-step, guided tutorial
(20 minutes) followed by activities for participants to apply what they learned
in the demonstration (30 minutes each).

Arkansas BBQ Cooks Team Up To Fight Cancer
B Street Rib Off Benefits American Cancer Society of Central Arkansas
LITTLE ROCK, ARK.; July 29, 2019 – The 11th annual B Street Rib Off will take place on Saturday, September 7th in the Argenta Art District of North Little Rock. The annual event features a BBQ cooking competition focused on amateur cooking teams from across the mid-south with all proceeds from the event going to the American Cancer Society of Central Arkansas.
“The B. Street Rib Off is a wonderful partner for us here at the American Cancer Society of Central Arkansas,” said Matthew Bancroft, community development officer for the American Cancer Society - Arkansas. “I would like to encourage everyone to come out and enjoy delicious barbecue while supporting the B Street Rib Off and American Cancer Society’s mission of helping people stay well, get well, finding cures and fighting back.”
In addition to the BBQ competition, the event will feature live music, beverages from Flyway Brewing Company and a raffle that includes merchandise from several Arkansas retailers. Teams interested in cooking for the competition can register at BStreetRibOff.org. There, teams will also find a list of rules and more information about the competition.
The public is encouraged to attend the event and judge the People’s Choice category for a small donation. The event is family friendly and will kick off at 8 a.m. with results announced at 4 p.m. on September 7th.
Jason Brown, Justin Hinton and Matthew Ross founded the B Street Rib Off as a friendly backyard competition in 2008. After increased interest, the three friends turned the annual event into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The organization now boasts a board of directors with nine members from across the state.
